CA - Bad and Good
The California Senate is expected to vote next week on a bill that could rescue the state's prohibition of military- style assault weapons from legal limbo.
Sen. Richard Polanco, D-Los Angeles, won approval of technical amendments today, clearing the way for a floor vote on the bill by Assemblyman Don Perata, D-Oakland. It passed the Assembly earlier. Proponents say the bill skirts problems with the present assault weapons law.

Meanwhile, in a stinging blow to the gun ban movement, California's Third Appellate Court of Appeals declared that California's Roberti-Roos gun ban "defies rationality." In a case brought by the National Rifle Association of America (NRA) and its state affiliate, the California Rifle & Pistol Association, the three-member state appellate panel criticized the law's premise -- banning guns based on their cosmetic appearance -- and struck down a key portion of the law.
The court ruled as unconstitutional a provision of the law allowing the state's Attorney General to add guns to the list of banned firearms. The court even went so far as to suggest that the entire law unconstitutionally "violates equal protection" because the 75 banned firearms are indistinguishable from other guns not affected by the law.

IL Gun Control Group Issues Grades
Illinois Citizens for Handgun Control (ICHC) released today its candidate grades for the gubernatorial primaries. The ICHC grades the candidates based on the following criteria: questionnaire answers, past voting records, gun lobby endorsements and their legislative proposals to reduce gun violence in Illinois.
For the democratic primary, ICHC gave "A+" grades to Jim Burns, Roland Burris and John Schmidt for their commitment to make Illinois safer from gun violence [read: "safer for criminals"], Glenn Poshard, on the other hand, received a "D" grade for his poor voting record on gun violence issues, his endorsement by the Illinois State Rifle Association and his inability to craft a legislative vision to reduce gun violence in Illinois. [read: "voted to protect people's rights and helped initiate legislation tough on criminals, not on inanimate objects"]
"Illinois loses too many people each year to gun violence. We need a governor who will protect these innocent victims, not the interests of the gun lobby and gun industry," said Dan Kotowski, the [clueless] executive director of ICHC. [Um... Dan, what color is the sky in your world?]
For the republican primary, ICHC gave Secretary of State George Ryan a "B+" grade and his opponent, Chad Koppie, received an "F." [Obviously Chad is an insensitive lout]
The Illinois Citizens for Handgun Control (ICHC) is the lobbying arm of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence (ICHV). It works through a legislative network to violate peoples rights and persecute law-abiding citizens while ignoring the true problems faced by society. They can be reached for comment or a good tongue lashing at (312) 341-0939.

BTW... Vote for Chad Koppie!!!!!
