Recent military trials were conducted to seek improvements on the current issue M4 carbine. Failure to extract was one of the main deficiancies that needed to be addressed. With the help of a research and developement company Olympic Arms has basically solved the failure to extract issue.

The solution is a combination of an extractor spring made from a recently declassified aerospace material that will not fail under heat and presure, and what has become known as the EXring® buffer.

The EXring® system installed
The EXring® is a polymer ring that goes around the extractor spring, replaceing the standard blue extractor spring buffer.

The EXring® is made exclusively for Olympic Arms and is an inexpensive solution to most extraction problems. Simply place the EXring® around your extractor spring (above left), reinstall the extractor spring into the extractor . It's that simple. Using the EXring® will add tension and much needed support to the extractor and extractor spring assisting in the proper and fully reliable extraction of spent cases.

Here you can clearly see where the "X" portion of the name came from. The profile of the poly ring is actually "X" shaped.
